2020 in A Nutshell, What’s Next Now?

fQR Weave
4 min readDec 30, 2020

Since the last quarter of 2020, and the developments of fQR Weave technology didn’t take a break. The idea of the platform was founded to improve the effectiveness of the QR codes.

Invented 2 decades ago, QR codes never became the revolutionary marketing strategy that businesses and marketers had hoped, neither an anti-forgery tool that business developers had expected.

What is fQR Weave? and how it started?

fQR Weave is an anti-counterfeiting solution with a governance tekonomic system (Profit Sharing Community — PSC ) built on Arweave’s blockweave.

Profiting from “Pay Once, Save Forever” feature provided by Arweave technology, fQR Weave ensure to create QR codes with encoded data that exist forever! From the other side, the uniqueness of public addresses and hashes, transaction IDs improve the act of authenticity proof.

fQR Weave is an open source project. During Arweave Open Web Fellowship, project’s developments were published on Rani Elhusseini (founder) personal Github account. But to be more compatible with open source developments and possible community contributions, we migrated the source codes to an organization page.

On December 7th, fQR Weave presented a pitch on the demo day with many amazing projects built on Arweave:

fQR Weave first client:

It didn’t take long to land the first customer for our platform. After weeks of negotiation while fQR Weave was in its very early developments, International Center for Training & Development (ICTD) decided to integrate fQRs on their newly issued certifications in intention to authenticate their official papers. Click HERE to check the announcement.

The integration won’t be limited to authenticate about 7000 yearly students certifications only, but it will also be used to authenticate the certificates of National Robotics Competition (NRC) in Lebanon.

Technical Traction

Several technical upgrades happened since the release of fQR Weave alpha version: redesign the UI of fqrweave.tech, performance optimization of fQR reader and generator tools, published the first version of project’s lightpaper, and recently we released a python SDK due the industrial possible upcoming integrations .

fqrweaveSDK:

The python package was released recently and it is in its v0.0.4 in the time of writing. The SDK is an important tool to be available because it transforms any complex into an easier, and simple one.

The current version supports several methods including fQR batch generating and generating fQR codes from CSV datasets, which were listed in the roadmap of Q1 2021.

.batch_generator() : This function is used to generate n quantity of fQR codes from the same data; e.g. used in a loop to generate 1000 fQRs for a chocolate bar.

.csv_generator() : This function has a practical clear use case, take a .csv dataset and generate an fQR from each row; e.g. generate students certificates fQRs .

Near Future Plans

Business developments

Within Q1 2021, we expect to have several new landed clients from various business fields. Actually, it’s not an “expectation”, there are ongoing negotiations from early December 2020 aiming to finalize it within the next few months with new clients.

Technical Developments

fqrweaveSDK still in its early releases, therefore, continuous upgrades and new features implementation is going on.
And one of the most interesting upcoming feature, is the Dynamic fQR. This new type of fQR codes inherit the features of Dynamic QR codes, and add it to the immutability, uniqueness and transparency of fQR codes.

What will Dynamic fQR code do?

Dynamic fQR (dfQR) will be an enhanced fQR. Unlike the static fQR codes which have limited flexibility, dfQR codes are more supply-chain compatible and can help business developments and marketing analysis in the same time of being an anti-counterfeiting tool.

Monitor the scanning activity:

dfQR Prototype

If you’re a marketer, you know how important it is to monitor the behavior of your audience. It helps you understand them better and improve your subsequent campaigns accordingly.

A dfQR Code helps you do this. It helps you track the scanning activity based on various parameters. For example:

a. How many people scanned your unique fQR Code
b. Scanning geo-location
c. Type (mobile, tablet, desktop) and brand (Samsung, Huawei, etc.) of devices used in the scan.

dfQR codes give you a deep insight into how your campaign is working out, or help you to analyze and predict where your products/items have been forged. Hence fQR Weave will provide two types of fQR codes: static & dynamic.

We have already start working on the dfQR feature, the generating process have been developed and tested. Data analysis and visualizations dashboard is planned to be released publicly in Q1 2021.
